Commending Mandela Month: Celebrating the Legacy of a True Global Icon

With July upon us, a wave of reverence and reflection sweeps across the globe to honour the strong spirit of the late President Nelson Mandela during the annual commemoration of Nelson Mandela Month. This special occasion, observed on July 18th, serves as a poignant reminder of Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary contributions to fostering equality, compassion and human rights. It calls upon individuals, communities, organizations and businesses to dedicate their time, skills, and resources to make a positive impact on society, echoing his lifelong commitment to public service. By harnessing the power of unity, Nelson Mandela Month serves as a catalyst for transforming lives, embracing inclusivity and fostering connections that transcend boundaries.

Chairman of Black Impact Foundation (BIF) Clarence Seedorf was honored as one of the few Legacy Champions by Madiba in 2009 to carry on his legacy worldwide. So it’s not a surprise that  BIF has created a platform like the Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS), a landmark event that promises to be a unique and transformative experience for individuals celebrating Black excellence and driving positive change. Therefor, commemorating Mandela Month is a natural action to keep promoting the values and objectives of his legacy. The Global Black Impact Summit, created by BIF and organised by Energy Capital & Power, is scheduled to take place on November 30th and December 01st, 2023 – in Dubai offering a dynamic platform for networking, learning and collaboration, with a focus on uniting and connecting the Black community with the aim of strengthening inclusivity, equality, education and entrepreneurship.

The prevailing emphasis of Nelson Mandela Month centres around “67 Minutes for Madiba on Nelson Mandela Day,” signifying the symbolic 67 years that Nelson Mandela dedicated to public service, persevering through adversity, and unwaveringly championing the cause of social justice, ultimately culminating in his historic tenure as the inaugural President of the newly birthed South Africa. This day captures the ideals that Nelson Mandela adopted throughout his life—forgiveness, reconciliation and the belief that each individual possesses the power to change the world for the better. By encouraging people to devote just a fraction of their time, 67 minutes, to acts of kindness, Mandela Day urges us to acknowledge our collective responsibility in effectuating meaningful change.

BIF, with its emphasis on uniting and celebrating the Black community, recognizes the impact of Mandela’s legacy in inspiring and shining light on individuals worldwide to enhance inclusivity, equality, education and entrepreneurship within the overall community. As the spirit of Madiba is integral part of the Foundation, people can join BIF to unite under a shared purpose and amplify their efforts towards effectuating meaningful change and foster reconciliation and social justice.

By highlighting the shared values of Mandela’s Legacy, BIF becomes an ideal platform for engaging in positive dialogues, forging partnerships, and formulating a proactive approach to support Black individuals globally.

One of the fundamental pillars of both GBIS and Mandela Month is education. Recognizing that education plays a pivotal role in unlocking opportunities, both initiatives place a strong emphasis on enhancing educational access and quality.

Acknowledging the profound impact of Mandela, we invite you to unite with us in amplifying Black voices by supporting the Black Impact Foundation and joining GBIS and other BIF initiatives.

Inclusivity Through Education: Driving Equal Opportunity and Strengthening the Global Black Community

Education systems that value diversity and the unique contributions that students of all backgrounds bring to the classroom is the most effective way to ensure that all students receive a fair opportunity to develop the skills they need to thrive.

As such, this year’s Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) – powered by the Black Impact Foundation (BIF) – taking place in Dubai from 30 November to 1 December, will serve as the premier opportunity to highlight the role that inclusive education plays in allowing diverse groups to grow side-by-side, to the benefit of all.

Building a cohesive global Black community by increasing involvement and participation in educational, social, and business opportunities serves as one of the BIF’s core mission statements. The Foundation aims to provide opportunities to reach a better quality of life through the development and strengthening of an inclusive and equal society.

Inclusive education means that every child has the right to quality education and learning. As such, successful inclusive education ensures the right to high-quality instruction, interventions, and support that enables success in the core curriculum. Attention to student diversity is imperative towards making sure all students feel welcome, appropriately challenged, and supported in their efforts towards developing the skills they need to become well-informed and productive members of the global community.

Connectivity and inclusivity will be a significant steppingstone towards building education systems that establish a community of influential role models and impactful leaders that strengthen the Black community around the world. As such, solutions towards promoting inclusive education will ensure that no students are left behind.

The Summit aims to drive conversations around the development of social economic independence and responsibility. By focusing on inclusivity through education, GBIS 2023 will serve as a pillar towards further developing an equal society through entrepreneurship, research, and support to improve and encourage social mobility throughout and within the global Black community.

There is an urgent need to examine the intellectual, cultural, and political contributions of the African diaspora and harness the analytical tools to strengthen the global understanding towards enabling researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to develop transgressive possibilities of education worldwide. Diverse education adds richness and depth to frequently overlooked forms of knowledge. Such scholarship is poised to promote comparative and international perspectives while positively impacting all Black children, young people, and adults across borders.

inclusivity

What’s more, improving school facilities and home learning environments can serve to boost attendance, learning outcomes, and children’s wellbeing. As such, it is critical to implement and develop platforms that increase access to associated funding that adequately supports the provision of quality education to further build, protect, and sustain an equal opportunity global society. To achieve this goal, teachers must be trained, buildings must be refurbished, and students must receive accessible learning materials, while national governments must align laws and policies to ensure children are reached with effective services.

In establishing an inclusive educational system, different models of funding and different modes of how resources are processed will need to be taken into consideration in order to provide the most effective and equitable benefits to students. By recognizing the societal needs and restrictions of the global community, productive conversations around gender equality, children with special needs, and access for low-income households will serve as a steppingstone towards ensuring that all students receive the opportunity to have learning experiences in line with their aspirations.

Powered by the BIF, whose vision is to create a community that asserts the value, builds a capacity for social economic dependence, and improves the quality of Black lives, GBIS 2023 will be the most comprehensive summit for global leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, and students to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the global Black community. The upcoming GBIS in Dubai will highlight the power of connection and networking between individuals and communities and, by recognizing the role inclusive education plays in fostering wellbeing and social change, make substantial progress towards developing societies that value diversity and inclusion.

Mental Health Awareness Month: Nurturing Mental Wellbeing for a More Resilient Future

May 1 marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month, a period dedicated to raising awareness on mental health and wellbeing, while eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health issues. With the upcoming Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) taking place in Dubai this November, the intersectionality of mental health within the Black community has emerged as a key component in developing the next generation of future leaders and role models and building strong, impactful and inclusive communities.

Health and wellbeing represent one of the six pillars upon which the Black Impact Foundation is built, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental health in creating opportunities and encouraging social mobility within Black communities. The Foundation aims to promote health equity and access to quality healthcare for Black individuals, raise awareness about mental health issues and provide support and resources for members within its community.

While mental health represents a crucial aspect of overall wellbeing, it is often stigmatized and overlooked, particularly within communities of color where access to adequate resources is limited. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every eight individuals worldwide grapples with a mental disorder, which can cause significant disruptions in thinking, emotional regulation or behavior, as well as lead to a domino-like chain of effects like unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness and incarceration.

Mental health issues and access to healthcare services in particular took a significant hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, with anxiety and depressive disorders seeing a rise of over 25% during the first year of the pandemic. WHO states that around 10-25% of the population in African countries experience a mental health disorder in any given year, with common disorders including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and substance abuse. Given the pervasiveness of mental health issues in Black communities, it is a critical time to come together and find tangible solutions to increasing equity and availability of mental health resources.

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder to prioritize mental health and foster a culture of understanding and acceptance. It encourages individuals to educate themselves and others about mental health, recognize the signs of mental health conditions, seek support when needed and engage in self-care practices to maintain good mental health. It also emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma associated with mental health and creating safe spaces for open and honest conversations about mental health challenges.

This year’s GBIS presents a unique opportunity to bring mental health awareness to the forefront of discussions on social impact and change. The Summit aims to connect, inspire and empower the Black community globally to drive positive change and create a more inclusive world. Integrating mental health discussions into the Summit’s agenda will highlight the significant role that mental health plays in the larger picture of socioeconomic growth and opportunity.

Addressing mental health within the Black community offers several key benefits, including improved individual wellbeing, stronger communities and increased productivity and economic prosperity. When individuals have access to mental health resources, support and education, they are better equipped to manage stress, build resilience and navigate challenges. This can lead to healthier relationships, more effective problem-solving skills and enhanced overall functioning in various aspects of life, including work, education and social engagement.

Additionally, prioritizing mental health can contribute to breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma and promote healing and resilience within the global Black community. Promoting mental health awareness and wellbeing also has broader societal implications. It can contribute to reducing disparities in health outcomes, promoting social equity and fostering a more inclusive society. When mental health is prioritized and stigma is reduced, it can encourage more individuals to seek help when needed, access appropriate care and engage in preventative  measures. This can lead to reduced health care costs and a more vibrant and resilient society overall.

The upcoming GBIS in Dubai highlights the power of connection and networking among individuals and communities, emphasizing the value of unity in advancing mental health support for the Black community. This year’s summit recognizes that fostering connections and promoting dialogue is crucial for addressing mental health challenges. Through connection and collaboration, substantial progress can be made in promoting mental wellbeing within the Black community and improving support systems and resources that cater to underserved communities.

As we commemorate Mental Health Awareness Month and look ahead to the GBIS in Dubai, it is essential to recognize the intersectionality of mental health within the Black community and the critical role it plays in fostering wellbeing and social change. It is a time to prioritize mental health, eliminate stigma and create a culture of understanding, acceptance and support. By prioritizing mental health within the Black community, we can work towards a better future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive mentally, emotionally, professionally and socially. Let us come together to advocate for mental health awareness and empower individuals and communities to take steps towards better mental health and wellbeing for all.
