Meanwhile, Mozambican social scientist Alice Banze boasts a 25-year career in civil society and government and is the Executive Director of the Gender and Sustainable Development Association. Elected to the National Elections Commission in 2020 with support from the Women’s Forum, she exemplifies transformative female leadership in Mozambique.

Many women are rising through the ranks across industries by forging their own paths. One example is Linda Mabhena-Olagunju, the founder and CEO of DLO Energy Resources Group, who leads a Black women-owned renewable energy company that focuses on wind power projects in South Africa. Other figures like Oprah Winfrey, who has built a media empire, and Ursula Burns, the first Black woman to head a Fortune 500 company, show the strength and determination of Black female leaders.

Yet despite their notable accomplishments, Black women in leadership often encounter systemic challenges to representation. In the US, Forbes reports that only 4.4% of Black women hold managerial roles, and merely 1.4% occupy executive-level positions, despite comprising 7.4% of the American population. In contrast, in Africa, women are making significant strides in governance roles. According to data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, four African nations—Rwanda, Namibia, South Africa and Senegal—are among the top 15 countries globally for the highest representation of women in parliament. Rwanda leads with an impressive 61.3% of female parliamentarians, yet the sub-Saharan African average stands at 23.6%.

The intersectionality of race and gender amplifies challenges in the workplace for Black women, necessitating targeted efforts to address and mitigate specific barriers to leadership. Initiatives centered on diversity, equity and inclusion are crucial for dismantling these barriers and creating a more equitable playing field. To achieve this, companies and organizations must implement policies that recognize the unique value and perspectives of Black women in their respective industries, fostering a more inclusive environment that provides equal opportunities for success.

As the first woman and first Black person to hold the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland has been a staunch advocate for legal and social justice on a global scale. Her legal career includes work in family law and her leadership in international organizations underscores the importance of diversity in shaping legal frameworks.

Meanwhile, Fred Gray made history as Martin Luther King Jr.’s first civil rights attorney and the defender of Rosa Parks in Browder v. Gayle. His victories against segregation, which include his crucial role in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, have had a lasting impact on civil rights in America. Recognized with the Soaring Eagles Award in 2003, Gray’s legacy underscores the often systemic challenges faced by lawyers of color.

These trailblazers represent just a few of the many Black lawyers and judges who have made lasting impacts on the global justice system, with their achievements motivating aspiring legal professionals from diverse backgrounds. These individuals serve as role models and mentors, encouraging generations to come to pursue careers in law and effect positive change. Tracking the Evolution of Black Excellence in Arts and Entertainment

The arts and entertainment industry represents one of the leading economic sectors worldwide. With a strong influence on both culture and economy, the industry is composed of a diverse slate of creatives that power not only the products of the sector, but also the experience of life itself. Within this success, much of the development of modern-day art and entertainment can be attributed to the influence, contributions and innovation of Black artists.

Taking place in Dubai on February 27, 2024, the third edition of the Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) delves into the achievements of Black individuals and organizations across sectors, which could not be better illustrated than by the history of Black talent in the global arts and entertainment industry. The Summit marks a celebration of #BlackExcellence and features a comprehensive program of workshops, seminars, networking functions and presentations aimed at catalyzing new collaboration across disciplines.

Black creatives have played an integral part in shaping the global arts and entertainment space. Starting with the Harlem Renaissance in the US from the 1920s to 1930s, the movement represented an intellectual and cultural revival of Black art, literature, music, dance, fashion and scholarship, and laid the foundation from which much of modern creativity is derived. Over 100 years on, the Black arts and entertainment community has become one that connects the world, transcends the boundaries of space and time, creates economic opportunities and promotes the narratives of Black individuals worldwide.

From a literary perspective, Black authors have provided an in-roads to the complexities, achievements and challenges of the lived Black experience. Works by luminaries such as Toni Morrison, an American novelist and Nobel Prize-winning author; Maya Angelou, famous poet and author; Langston Hughes, Harmon Gold Medal winner for literature; and many more represent some of the most influential contributions of all time. Meanwhile, Black visual artists have been central to the global art movement. Influential artists include John Koenakeefe Mohl, South African artist and founder of the first school for Black artists in Sophiatown, Johannesburg; Norman Lewis, the only Black Abstract Expressionist of the first generation; Chéri Samba, renowned contemporary artist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Jean-Michel Basquiat, American neo-expressionist artist who challenged traditional power structures and systemic racism; and Yinka Shonibare, British-Nigerian artist specializing in traditional African wax print fabrics, among others.

Black excellence in arts and entertainment continues to be a force for change, enlightenment and inspiration. The achievements of Black creators in film and music, for example, have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of storytelling. In music, Black creators have been responsible for innovations in the ebb and flow of composition and performance worldwide and are widely credited with the invention of gospel, rock and roll, blues, jazz, reggae, house, hip hop and afrobeat genres. Transcending the bounds of entertainment, music serves as a tool to share stories, address social concerns and drive transformative change, and several musicians are considered pioneers in this regard. These include Ella Fitzgerald, nicknamed the “Queen of Jazz”; Big Joe Turner, one of the most influential Black musicians of all time; Charlie Parker, the “father of modern jazz”; James Brown, the central progenitor of funk music; and Tina Turner, nicknamed the “Queen of Rock n’ Roll”, among many more. 

Meanwhile, the work of Black composers and actors in film and television continues to move audiences. From bringing fresh storylines to challenging racial stereotypes, Black filmmakers, directors and actors have made an indelible impact on the film industry. Directors such as Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay and Barry Jenkins, to name a few, have shaped the Black film industry, while actors such as Hattie McDaniel – the first Black person to win an Oscar – Angela Bassett, Sidney Poitier, Ethel Waters and more have demonstrated Black excellence within their craft to the highest degree.

These creatives have not only provided audiences with poignant storylines and unforgettable characters, but also opened doors for the next generation of Black filmmakers and actors to take the stage. The GBIS serves to highlight the contributions, achievements and influence of Black talent and their continued efforts to spur inspiration, engagement and collaboration within their respective fields. The organization promotes discourse on the intersection of environmentalism, social justice and female empowerment.

In the realm of legal advocacy, Founder of the African Prisons Project, Nigerian judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, has worked across the continent to improve the living conditions and legal rights of prisoners. The organization aims to provide education, support and access to opportunities for rehabilitation. Eboe-Osuji’s work has been globally recognized for transforming the role of legal advocacy in marginalized communities.

These nonprofits, founded and led by Black leaders, exemplify the far-reaching impact of grassroots initiatives on addressing systemic challenges on a global scale. Organized by the Black Impact Foundation, the upcoming Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) – taking place in Dubai in February 2024 – explores the Black community’s past contributions to and future opportunities within the global energy industry.

Diversity is more than a buzzword; it is a key driver of progress and innovation. In the energy sector, the establishment of a diverse workforce generates a wide range of perspectives, experiences and talents, resulting in more robust problem-solving, enhanced creativity and a heightened capacity for innovation. According to a report from McKinsey, Delivering through Diversity, entities led by ethnically and culturally diverse leadership exhibit a 33% greater likelihood of outperforming their peers. Black professionals, from petroleum engineers to geophysical scientists to entrepreneurs, have made significant contributions to the energy sector to date. Prior leaders like Warren M. Washington have spearheaded pioneering work in climate modeling, while current leaders like Robert F. Smith are investing in renewable energy solutions. Similarly making strides in Africa’s energy sector is Catherine Uju Ifejika – the first woman to serve as the chair and CEO of an upstream E&P company in Nigeria – who has achieved milestones like the successful operation of the Ajapa FPSO and establishment of six subsidiary companies within seven years.

Committed to change, countries around the world are increasingly recognizing the importance of equal representation within their energy industries. For example, Canada’s commitment to enhanced diversity is evident through its Indigenous and Black Communities in Energy Program, which supports underrepresented groups with scholarships and capacity-building initiatives. Moreover, in partnership with the Pembina Institute, the Canadian Government invests in indigenous-led clean energy projects with a view to building a more inclusive energy future.

Similarly, the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) plays a crucial role in advocating for equal representation and opportunities for Black energy professionals. AABE focuses on initiatives such as mentorship programs, scholarships and networking events to support the career development of Black individuals in the energy sector.

Innovation thrives in diverse environments, and Black voices are able to bring unique perspectives and new alternatives to the energy sector’s most pressing challenges. Whether it’s advancing low-carbon technologies, optimizing grid systems or addressing environmental concerns, diverse teams are more likely to develop groundbreaking solutions. By fostering an environment that welcomes and nurtures Black talent, the energy sector can accelerate progress in every direction.

Representation matters—not just within organizations, but also among leadership roles. Having Black leaders at the helm of major energy companies not only inspires the next generation of talent, but also ensures that decision-making reflects a wide range of perspectives. Individuals like NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, have set an example by prioritizing diversity within upper management positions. According to Ayuk, “Black leaders in the energy sector bring unique insights, resilience and innovative thinking to the table. Their presence not only enriches the industry, but also provides for a more inclusive and equitable future. Let us not forget the exceptional contributions of Black women, whose talents and leadership continue to drive positive change in our evolving energy landscape.”

Sage Gallon to Showcase Black Excellence through Live Art Performance at GBIS 2024

Black artists have played an integral part in shaping the global art and entertainment industry to what it is today. From introducing innovative concepts to challenging societal norms to delivering thought-provoking and impactful pieces, Black artists have set a strong precedent worldwide.  

During the third edition of the Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS),  award-winning painter, photographer, poet, filmmaker and recording artist Sage Gallon will deliver a live art performance. Gallon’s series of paintings created throughout the summit will showcase and celebrate Black excellence in art, inspiring those across the global Black community. The paintings will be also auctioned during the event’s Gala Dinner.

A self-taught artist, Gallon made his entry into the art world in 2013 with a group show. Since this debut, he has become a sought-after artist, having been named in NBC’s The Grio as one of the 40 Artists to Watch. His works have been collected and exhibited in galleries across the United States. In addition to art, Gallon wrote and produced a series of critically acclaimed short films while two of his four documentaries have won awards.

Across various disciplines, Gallon has made his mark, and his participation at GBIS aligns seamlessly with the event’s core mission of fostering a sense of collective strength and solidarity among Black individuals across the globe. His artwork, known for its ability to convey powerful messages and emotions, will serve as a visual representation of the unexplored potential within the Black community.

Widely recognized for his evocative and thought-provoking artworks, Gallon’s live art performance will contribute to the overarching theme – Black Excellence: Unleashing the Explored Potential for Global Unity – through the medium of art. His live painting sessions throughout the event will capture the essence of unity, resilience, and creativity within the Black community. Attendees of the summit can look forward to witnessing Gallon’s creative process in real-time, as he translates the themes of Black Excellence and global unity onto canvas. Global Black Impact Summit Postponed to 22-23 February 2024

In light of the deeply concerning global events taking place, the Black Impact Foundation (BIF) has made the decision to reschedule the Global Black Impact Summit (GBIS) to February 22-23, 2024, in the United Arab Emirates.

GBIS is a celebration of Black excellence, uniting role models, influential figures and leaders from across the global Black community to promote connectivity and engagement while inspiring the next generation of leaders. With everything going on in the world, both the BIF and GBIS event-organizer Energy Capital & Power recognize that this is a time of somber reflection, not one of worldwide celebration.

“In light of the current global situation, we have made the decision to postpone GBIS to next year. A central point of focus of the summit is to connect the global Black community, uniting people, companies, and leaders under efforts to strengthen communities, generate new ideas and innovations, while promoting the power that Black people hold. Our choice is driven by a respect for all those affected by current global events,” states Clarence Seedorf, Chairman of the BIF.
